The bottom of the ladder Demons, featuring ten first year players, jumped to a shock lead at quarter time against the Premiership contender Magpies. They played with more determination, and their quick play-on tactics had the Magpies rattled. Bob McKenzie kicked five of his seven goals in the first term alone, giving his side a surprise 19 point advantage.

Collingwood recovered in the second term, piling on 7.6.48 to 0.1.1. They quick took the lead, McKenzie was nowhere to be seen and the Pies were never in danger of losing again. Melbourne's dominance in the ruck was wasted when Collingwood's small players were allowed to run riot, and despite the Demons winning the third quarter by a point they suffered their biggest loss to the Pies since 1931. It was Collingwood's largest score against Melbourne since 1937, when they kicked 21.16 and lost.

Best were McKenzie, Denis Cordner and Wood. McKaige replaced Ray Hutchins (knee) in the second quarter, and O'Keefe replaced Beckwith (strained back) at half time.
