Jim Stynes kept his 159 game consecutive games streak alive despite being on crutches earlier in the week with a medial knee ligament strain.
Melbourne were known for having one of the better attacks in the league, while Carlton owned the best defence. On the day attack won out, especially Carlton's accurate kicking in the first half, but Melbourne couldn't follow the Blues in the final term after starting 15 points behind. They had built their win on two goals just before quarter time and another three just before half-time.
Melbourne had their chances in the third quarter where they were the better side, but kicked inaccurately and only managed four behinds. Stynes wasn't a factor, having almost no impact on the game and spending time on the interchange.
Best were Lyon, Schwarz and B. Lovett.
The loss dropped the Demons down to seventh, just one game away from slipping out of the top eight.
