After five straight losses the Redlegs had collapsed to fourth last on the ladder, but worse was to come against the 1-10 Maroons at Brunswick Street.
In a game dominated by wind to one end of the ground the Demons were wasteful with their chances in the first quarter and it cost them. Fitzroy kicked two more goals when they had their chance with the breeze, and that was the difference between the two sides in the end.
Vine, Beames and Ogden were best.
Despite the loss Melbourne were still only three games outside the top four.
