In the traditional Queen's Birthday clash, the Pies took a narrow lead into quarter time before Melbourne completely fell apart.
Cameron Bruce tried to outbank Scott Burns instead of punching, Simon Godfrey tried a 20m chip pass to David Neitz in a hopeless position. By half-time the Demons had more centre clearances, more forward 50's and just two fewer scoring shots but they were five goals down.
Chris Tarrant was dominant on Clint Bizzell in the first half, but Chris Lamb moved onto him in third quarter and limited his efficiency somewhat.
The Demons got to just over four goals behind in the third quarter but it was as good as it got for them on a dirty day.
Best were Godfrey, Williams and Bruce.
