Footscray went into the game as hot favourites, but Melbourne put up a surprisingly good fight. They had the first goal of the day through Smith, but that prompted an immediate response from the visitors. After strong defensive work from Deayton momentarily kept them at bay the Tricolours began to trouble Melbourne's defence. They kicked the last five goals of the quarter to set up a comfortable gap.
Melbourne were improved after the first break, and after two wasted chances eventually broke through via Heal. They fought back to just seven points behind at half time courtesy of a late goal by Jack Mueller. They failed to carry the momentum into the third quarter, Footscray quickly rattled on three goals, and ended with eight for the term to nil. Seven goals to three salvaged some pride for the Demons but they were beaten comfortably.
Best were Mueller, who dominated in the ruck all day, Ted Cordner and Percy Beames. Powell was unused 19th man.
