Stuck at the bottom of the ladder, behind the moribund Fitzroy on percentage, Melbourne registred their second win of the season against the only team in the league with a comparable injury list. Collingwood suffered four more injuries and went down to their fourth straight loss.
After an even first quarter, Melbourne took control with a 5.4 to 0.1 second term. David Neitz was named in defence but went forward and kicked all his four goals by half time. The sides were level for the rest of the game but the damage was done. Collingwood opened the third term with six consecutive behinds, only for Alastair Clarkson to cancel them all out with the next goal. Two more goals in the next two minutes were a fatal blow to the Pies.
Best were Stynes, Neitz and Clarkson. Neil Balme said he wasn't "getting too excited" and was "just pleased to win a game".
