The Demons travelled to Geelong on the back of a win against Fitzroy which had restarted their season and jumped to a big lead at quarter time. In a quick burst during the first term Gary Baker got two goals, Billy Barham and Carl Ditterich, in his 200th game, one apiece.
Still 26 points in front at half time it had helped that the Cats managed just 3.10 in the second quarter. The gap had been closed to one straight kick at three-quarter time, and the Cats came out on top in a see-sawing last term.
The margin was down to six points at three-quarter time but Peter Keenan extended the margin to 12 with the first goal of the last quarter. It took until halfway through the term for the Cats to draw level only to see Melbourne go in front again. Two goals from Ian Nankervis won it for the Cats.
Melbourne's best were Biffin, Alves and Keenan. Molloy replaced Tony Sullivan (calf) after half time and Barham was replaced by Fitzsimmons in the last quarter.
