The crowd was a then record for a VFL game held in a non-split round, and the Bombers got the important psychological victory in a top of the table battle. Played on a game with a muddy centre of the ground, Tassie Johnson set up John Lord for the first goal of the day. After a scuffle that ended with umpires and trainers trying to separate players, Nilsson got Melbourne's second goal from a free late in the quarter, to extend the margin to seven points.

Melbourne started the second quarter with the first two goals, before Essendon fought back, kicking three in a row to take a five point lead into half time. Essendon then took over in the third quarter, charging to a 29 point lead at the last change. The Demons attacked strongly early in the last quarter but couldn't find the system to get within striking range. It took them 12 minutes to kick the first goal, and when Dawson followed the gap was back to 17. Then Lord set up Nilsson, and the gap was 11. With their chance to get within a goal, Lord dropped a mark and Essendon swept the ball to the other end for the sealing goal.

L.Mann replaced Gleeson in teh third quarter and Matthews replaced Dawson in the last quarters. Dawson was originally named on the bench but was a late replacement in the starting side for Frank Adams, who had an ankle injury.
