After starting his career with the Under 19s in 1957, Nilsson's progress was slowed by breaking the same shoulder twice between the end of that season and 1958.

Once he reached the seniors in 1960, Nilsson impressed as a rover and forward pocket, retaining his place in the side right through to the Grand Final.

After recovering from a broken wrist in a practice match he was a regular again in 1961, but found opportunities limited in his last two years at the club when he played more as a wingman. Dropped from the list in the 1964 pre-season, he moved to South Melbourne in 1964 where he spent two seasons.

In 1966 Nilsson became captain/coach of South Warrnambool.
