Four straight victories had rebooted Melbourne's season after a poor start, but their biggest task going into a week's break for an interstate game was facing the top of the table Blues on their own turf.
Carlton's first half was true to form and they built up a commanding lead before the Demon stormed back to claim victory and rise to sixth on the ladder. Their forward play had been terrible in the first half, and it had cost them dearly despite almost breaking even in general play.
When the sides came out in the second half the Demons turned it on. They turned a 28 point deficit into a four point lead with a 10 minutje series of devastating attacks which earned them five goals. The two sides remained close in the last quarter but Carlton couldn't bridge the gap and suffered a surprise defeat.
Best were Bickford, Denis Cordner and Woods. 19th and 20th men were Spittle and McGowan,
