After first training with the club in the 1946 pre-season, Carlon made his senior debut three years later. He played 30 games over two seasons, but was 19th man 11 times in 1950. Carlon captained the Seconds in 1951 and 1952 without playing another senior game. During 1951 several VFA clubs sought he signature but he stayed at Melbourne.

In 1953 he coached Rennie in the NSW Coreena League and in 1954 was in charge of Cornwall in Tasmania.

Carlon later returned to the club as a recruiting officer. He was appointed to the committee in November 1970 to replace Brian Dixon, who was leaving to coach North Melbourne and remained on the committee until resigning in 1979.
