Richmond win by 21 points
Fourth placed Richmond welcomed second placed Melbourne to Punt Road, and struck a heavy blow in the battle for the top four. Heavy rain had ruined the quality of the ground, and would adversely impact on the standard of play during the match, but the home side were better in the conditions.
Melbourne were quicker earlier in the game and got off to a fast start with three goals to nil. They led through half time but their form disappeared in the second quarter and allowed Richmond to adapt to the conditions and take a two goal lead into the last quarter.
They extended their margin and climbed above Melbourne into second on percentage. With a difficult run in the next few weeks the Demons' place in the finals was all of a sudden in jeopardy.
Richmond won the free kick count 54-37 and the Melbourne camp complained about inconsistency in the decisions.
Best were Reiffel, Lock and Beames.
