In a battle of the league's easybeats Melbourne came home with the wind to record a win which jumped them above Carlton and St Kilda on the ladder. They remained an outside chance of playing in the finals but their form so far in registering three wins and six losses showed they were unlikely to put a good enough run together to qualify.
St Kilda kicked themselves out of the match with poor conversion in the first half, but it was a poor game all round. Neither side was accurate with its kicking or passing. Position play amongst forwards was weak, and for most of the match large packs of players chased the ball en masse.
With two debutantes in their side St Kilda began with a burst, scored first goal and forced the Melbourne defence to deal with several other attacks. By quarter time they'd scored 16 points to Melbourne's solitary behind but had been wasteful in their conversion.
In the second quarter Melbourne made a mess of several fine opportunities before finding their accuracy and kicking four goals in a row to tie the score at half time.
The visitors got the first goal of the third quarter within the opening minute but only managed one more, failing to take proper advantage of the wind to open up a defensible lead. Three behinds in a row gave Melbourne the lead early in the third quarter, and a goal to Tulloh opened up a nine point lead before St Kilda rallied. Melbourne lost Wittman to a fractured ankle, but despite playing a man short managed to hold on and extend the margin through another Tulloh goal.
Taylor, Dunbar and Streeter were best.
