A new season but the same frustrations for Demons fans. Only this time it was under a new coach, with Bob Skilton having taken over from Ian Ridley in the off-season.
Once again Melbourne showed promise for a first half but were swept away over four quarters for want of a potent forward line. The Blues were slow to start and looked uninterested early on. Graham Osborne was doing a job on Alex Jesaulenko and Garry Baker was dominating the ruck in his first MFC game, but when the Blues started to tune up in the second half Melbourne simply couldn't go with them.
Stephen Kerley only managed one kick up front, Carl Ditterich was beaten by Bruce Doull and the Blues midfield took hold en route to a big win. Keenan was replaced by Clennett at three quarter time and Flower by Collins during the last term.
