Saturday 1 July - Maryborough
Crowd: 700 to 800
Melbourne 5 (half time 1-2)
Melbourne won by 4 goals
Goalkickers: Downes 2, Goldsmith 2, James McDonald
Sillett won the toss for Melbourne, and straight from the home side's kickoff they attacked consistently until Downes scored the opening goal. Maryborough then equalised, but from there it was all Melbourne.
The local team had offering to bet 10 to 1 on themselves during the week before the match, such was their confidence at how they had advanced since their last meeting with Melbourne in August 1874. As it was they only managed to be one goal better.
