After 195 games with Hawthorn and St Kilda, including two premierships with the Hawks, Russo coached the Southern Stingrays in the 1992 Under 18s competition, before signing as an assistant coach with Melbourne at the end of the year. He had interviewed for a vacant coaching job at Hawthorn but missed out.

Russo also coached the Reserves in 1993, winning the premiership in his first season. He remained in the job until the end of 1996, but was axed after a football club review at the end of that year. Russo returned to St Kilda as Reserves coach and assistant to Stan Alves but left the club along with Alves at the end of 1998.
