Played Reserves in 1976 and 1977, then in three losses for the Demons as a ruckman in 1978, before being dropped from the senior list in the 1979 pre-season. In 1979 a relaxation lounge was opened for Melbourne players at the MCG and called the 'Sting Rea' Bar because Rea had put so much effort into building it. The name acknowledged that his name was usually mispronounced as ‘Ray’.

He turned back interest from VFA sides to join West Perth in the WAFL, playing there until joining Perth in 1981. There he became one of the most dominant forwards in the competition, twice topping the league goalkicking and booting 100 goals in 1985 and 90 in 1986. He was Perth's leading goalkicker six times during the 80s.
