Spotted by Jim Cardwell while on a scouting trip to see Hassa Mann, Avery was immediately named Thirds Vice-Captain in 1958. He was promoted to the senior list the next year but did not play a match. The centre half-back/ruckman trained with Richmond during the 1960 pre-season but returned to Melbourne, again not playing a game.
