Tuesday 1 July - Kangaroo Flat Cricket Ground
Sandhurst 1
Melbourne 3 (half time 0-0)
Melbourne win by 2 goals
Goalkickers: Anderson 2, Charles Carr 1
The locals scored first before the 17-man Melbourne side booted all three of their goals in quick succession. The visitors had the use of a strong wind in the first half, but missed a number of chances to open the scoring. When they did manage a straight kick it was chopped off by the Sandhurst defence. The locals battled hard into the wind, but their only good chance of the half fell short.
After the break Melbourne attacked straight into the teeth of the breeze, but conceded the goal. It was the wake up call the Reds needed, after 10 minutes of furious attack post-goal the equaliser came from Anderson. Soon Carr beat two opponents to mark a long kick for the second goal, and Anderson added his third almost immediately after.
With 20 minutes left to play, Sandhurst redoubled their efforts and troubled Melbourne's defence several times but couldn't break through and were defeated.
James Bennie, Charles Carr and Wheatland were best for Melbourne. Goldsmith was captain.
Notes
Some sources source say the score was 2-1, and the goalkickers were D'Arcy, Anderson and Carr
