Travelled to Melbourne without persuasion to try his luck in the VFL, but was refused a clearance by the WA League, then by the VFL when it was revealed he'd moved out of Melbourne's district and into Carlton's too soon. Ended up with Brunswick in 1927, then joined Carlton in 1928.
Returned to East Fremantle from 1929 to 1932
