1961 pre-season player and schoolboy athletics champion who agreed to train with Melbourne, but instead appeared with Hawthorn. A week later he surprised officials by turning up to Melbourne's session unannounced. He initially declined to sign with either side, waiting until after an intra-club game with the Hawks before making his decision.

Athorne lived in an unallotted zone, meaning he could pick his side, opting for Hawthorn and playing one senior game in Round 10 of that year.

Athorne represented Australia as a decathlete in the 1966 Commonwealth Games.
