Recruited from Tasmania by Jim Cardwell in 1964, Gormly missed the first two weeks of the 1965 season waiting for his clearance from the Tasmanian League. Once allowed to play, the centre-half back and half back flanker started with the Reserves, and also played with the Under 19s, before being a surprise call-up to train with the seniors before the last game of the season before being selected to debut.
A serious knee injury in a 1966 practice match became infected and landed Gormly in hospital for four weeks. He returned in the Reserves in 1967 before Cardwell arranged a coaching position at Lancefield. He then returned to Tasmania and played with Launceston from 1969 to 1976.
