In their first game against a top four side for the season, Melbourne missed the chance to seal a top two spot and a home final with their third interstate loss of the season. Brisbane dominated early and held the visitors scoreless in the opening term, but were unable to capitalise as they kicked four behinds in the first term. They reached 0.6 because kicking their first goal, but Melbourne had a purple patch before half time that generated four goals for the quarter and a 14 point half time lead.
A four goal to one third quarter to the scoring end put Brisbane ahead again at the final change, and the Lions kicked the only goal of the final term to hold on and record a vital win in the finals race.
Best were Hore, McNamara, and Zanker.
