Against a team which played mediocre football for most of the night Melbourne managed to blow a 27 point lead.
Missing Carl Ditterich, Robert Flower and Greg Wells the Demons had some excuses, but the Hawks were generally better all over the ground.
Leigh Matthews and Michael Tuck weren't up to their best in the first half and the Demons managed to jump to a three goal lead early. They let it slip, and the next couple of quarters fluctuated between the two sides before the Demons fired away to a 27 point lead on the back of Tony Elshaug and Garry Baker but the Hawks hit back with four goals in the last seven minutes to level the scores at three quarter time.
From then it was a procession and the Hawks moved through to the next round.
Best were R. Elliot, Baker and Giles.
