The son of George Bickford was recruited to the Under 19s in 1978 and graduated to the seniors two seasons later.

Despite being named the best rookie at the club that year he failed to take the next step during the 1981 disastrous season and played just six games that year before his VFL career ended. He sat out of football for year before joining VFA side Prahran in 1983, he played two years for them, then for Collegians in 1986.

Originally elected to the board in 1999, Bickford was re-elected for 2002 as part of Gabriel Szondy's "Team Vision" ticket with 6,694 votes. He resigned in 2008 along with Paul Gardner.

In 2015 he was named a Life Member for his long service to the club.
