The ruckman played 15 games over two seasons with Richmond and captained their Reserves side in 1975 before transferring to Arden Street. He developed such a reputation for playing in the wet, he was on standby to slot into the Kangaroos' 1976 Grand Final side if rain came. It didn't, but after breaking into the North side halfway through 1977 he held his spot for the Grand Final and replay.

At the end of 1979, after 51 games with the Kangaroos, Nettlefold joined the Demons in a cash deal along with his North teammate Brent Crosswell.

Nettlefold suffered a torn achilles tendon in the Round 21, 1981 clash with Essendon and despite returning to the reserves early the next year played just one more career game at the end of 1982 before retiring from the VFL. He returned to St Kevin's Old Boys and played two more seasons.

He is one of the few VFL/AFL players to have appeared in over 100 senior and Reserves games during his career.
