Recruited by VFA side Caulfield after finishing runner-up in Woori Yallock's best and fairest in 1973 and 1974, the ruck/rover played 83 consecutive games, and averaged 30 possessions before being recruited by Melbourne at 26 years old.

Rowe burst onto the scene with four goals on debut but failed to kick more than two again and by Round 17 he was out of the side never to return. He was delisted before the 1981 season and returned to Caulfield in 1981, then Woori Yallock in 1982 where he won their best and fairest. Also played for Warburton Millgrove.

In 1979 he had played for the Victorian Country cricket XI against the West Indies.

Appointed coach of VFA side Frankston in 1990, he remained there until joining Oakleigh in 1992. Rowe resigned midway through the year, citing a loss of enjoyment for the game.
