The Demons chose not to risk several key players including Steven Smith, Ross Brewer and Tony Dullard. They might have wished they'd not played Laurie Fowler either after he suffered severe facial injuries in a clash with teammate Henry Coles and landed in hospital. Up until that point he had been Melbourne's best player.
R. Flower, Wells and Campbell were best.
