George Margitich, Percy Beames, Reg Conole, Noel Barnett and Fred Ince flew to the match in a chartered plane as they were unable to travel with the rest of the team due to business commitments.

The match was played at a fast pace, but as the game went on Melbourne's superior training and teamwork showed out. The combined side blew many chances through individual play, but they start with a rush and kicked the first two goals before Roberts hit back for Melbourne. The league had a three point lead at quarter time, but Melbourne took a five point lead into half time. Riverina were as much as 13 points behind during the quarter before the Reds kicked two quick goals to cut the gap

Though the locals were allowed to substitute four players at half time, class and conditioning finally came to the fore in the third, with Melbourne opening up a match-winning lead by kicking 27 points to nine behinds. The locals added more singles in the opening minutes of the last before the visitors ran away.

Five members of the Melbourne side travelled to the game by aeroplane, but Bob Johnson missed the game as he wouldn't fly.
