Joined North Melbourne before the 1929 season and played one game for them early in the season before missing the entire period between 1930 and 1932. He also played with Port Melbourne during 1929.
In 1931 Tyson joined Camperdown, before crossing to Melbourne as a follower early in 1933 where he waited several weeks to make his debut, played two games in a row and did not appear for the senior side again.
After being cut by the Redlegs he trained with Essendon in the 1934 pre-season but didn't make their list. He was cleared to Fitzroy before the 1935 season but didn't play a game and instead rejoined Port Melbourne, where he was the club's leading goalscorer that year.
In 1937 he played for Kalgoorlie City in the Western Australian goldfields region and captained a representative side against South Australia before returning to Victoria in 1938 where he trained with Hawthorn but did not play.
His brother Charlie played 106 games for Collingwood and 38 for North Melbourne, coaching North for two years.
Tyson served during World War II and at one point was held as a prisoner of war in Italy.
