The Demons entered the day third, a game behind North Melbourne but with a significantly better percentages than the Shinboners. Their recent record at Glenferrie Oval had been better than in the early years of the ground, but their fast, play-on style of football was still vulnerable on the narrow ground.

After three straight strong victories Melbourne were made to work hard for victory. Not only were they on a ground that didn't suit them, but the heavy conditions also helped Hawthorn to keep it interesting. In a cramped, crowded game the Hawks matched Melbourne's physicality in the first half before falling away badly in the second.

The Hawks had travelled to Perth in their week off for the interstate break, and they faded away as the effects of the long journey started to catch up with them. They tamed Melbourne's rucks and rovers for the first three quarters but couldn't do it for the full match.

Four straight goals in the last quarter allowed the Demons to register another victory and stay in touch with the top two.

Laurie Mithen, Brian Dixon and Clyde Laidlaw were best. Geoff Tunbridge was replaced by Peter Brenchley at half time after suffering a concussion. Trevor Johnson was replaced by Ian Thorogood in the last quarter. Laidlaw also suffered a concussion.
