The last goal of an even first quarter went to Melbourne to give them a four point lead, Fitzroy had the majority of the play but Melbourne's defence was strong in keeping them at bay. Neither side managed a goal for the first 20 minutes of the second quarter before each side added one, with Fitzroy's inaccuracy delivering 1.6 for the term.

Melbourne were as much as 11 points clear in the third quarter before Fitzroy hit back to cut the gap to five. In the season's best last quarter the lead changed four times in 15 minutes, and twice were dead level, but it was the Roys who came out on top after a rush of attacks in the last few minutes finally breached the Demon defence.

The loss left Melbourne on the verge of dropping out of the race for the top four. They'd been better than expected in 1952 having won just a single game the year before

Best were Albiston, McKenzie and McMahen. Lack and Lane were 19th and 20th men.
