After restarting their season with a big win over North Melbourne the previous week, Melbourne came up against a more fancied opponent and went close to stealing a win with a late comeback.
Carlton had the wind in the first quarter and opened up a comfortable lead. Melbourne kicked poorly during the second quarter, and their goalkicking was so poor in windy conditions that they only managed three majors in the first three quarters.
Just when it looked like the game was over Melbourne finally used the wind to its advantage, booted four goals in the last and fell just two goals short.
Best for Melbourne were Longhurst, La Fontaine and Long.
