Freeborn remained at Woodville-West Torrens after being drafted, and was delisted without playing a game. In 1997, former Football Manager Richard Griffiths claimed Freeborn was told not to come to Melbourne after he was drafted because coach Neil Balme had not agreed with the selection.

He was named on the foundation Fremantle list for 1995 but was traded to North Melbourne before the season and played in a premiership with them the next year. Freeborn played another Grand Final in 1998 before being delisted by North, moving to Collingwood in the 1999 pre-season draft, remaining there until retiring at the end of 2003.
