After four consecutive wins, Melbourne returned home from two games in Adelaide and were comfortably beaten. After kicking the first goal of the match, they only registered two more before three quarter time in a lethargic performance, as the Lions built a match-winning lead. With the game comfortably won, the visitors allowed Melbourne to make the final margin more respectable with five last quarter goals.
Best were Gawn, Lever, and McDonald.
