First game and First goal
Matthew Bate
Having narrowly avoided an 0-4 start in Sydney the week before, Melbourne again had to win a thriller to keep the rebuilding of their season alive.
A tight, low-scoring first half was followed by a second where the Demons dominated to take a 20 point lead into the long break.
Midway through the last term the Kangaroos were 12 points in front, but Melbourne fought back and with just minutes left James McDonald roved a pack and snapped to put Melbourne in front.
Matthew Bate goalled with his first kick in league football.
Adem Yze was fined $900 for wrestling.
