The controversial hard-man, responsible for some of the biggest hits in modern football history was a Port Adelaide Under 19s player when they entered the AFL, but was homesick and returned to Port Lincoln. At the end of 1997 he nominated for the National Draft and was selected by North Melbourne. After one game in late 1997, Pickett won the AFL's Rising Star award and played in a Grand Final the following year. In 1999 he became a premiership player, and appeared in 120 games for the Roos. In 2003 Pickett joined Port Adelaide, where he won another flag and the Norm Smith Medal in 2004. He played 55 games for them before being traded to Melbourne at the conclusion of the 2005 season.
Pickett didn't curb his aggressive style of play at Melbourne, breaking the cheekbone of Ryan Crowley from Fremantle with a shepherd in Round 7, 2006. He battled hamstring injuries in his first year, which cost him a month of the season. Lacking match fitness, Pickett had a slow start to 2007. He played nine games, but spent four weeks with Sandringham after failing to turn up for the Round 7 match against the Bulldogs. It was later revealed that he sent Neale Daniher a text message to say he was too hungover to play.
After leaving at the end of 2007, Pickett returned to Port Adelaide's SANFL side for the next two years.
