North hadn't beaten Melbourne at the MCG since 1952, and it looked like this was the day they were going to snap the streak. been the dominant side for most of the day before the Demons charged home and stole victory. Melbourne had led at the end of the first quarter, but North took a lead of nearly three goals into the long break.

North's defence held firm until the last quarter when they finally cracked under an avalanche of attack led by Brian Dixon, Stan Alves and Geoff Whitton. Twice in the final minutes the scores were level, and it looked as if the training run that North had taken on Thursday before the game in an attempt to break their MCG hoodoo was going to pay dividends.

Then the ball flew inside the Demons forward line and Ross Dillon took a diving mark and found himself 35 yards out kicking for goal with the scores level. He had been inaccurate throughout the season, but needing only a behind to win the game he kicked his fifth goal, and a few seconds later the final siren went.

Best were Dixon, Dillon and Alves. Townsend (cut eye) was replaced by Dowsing in the last quarter. Brent Jones was an unused reserve.
