The Demons finally kicked a few goals, four more than they had in the first two games of the season combined, but unfortunately they'd also picked up the knack of conceding them freely. Part of the reason for the freefall might have been the three new players, or the punishing training he'd put the team through during the week. After a stern lecture at training players were given a tough match practice session where they were continually urged to get the ball at all costs.
With the Melbourne side suddenly being labelled in the papers as the worst seen for ten years, which wasn't difficult considering how good they had been for most of that decade, even a 43 point win wasn't enough to keep Tigers fans happy. 27 points in front at half time they had allowed Melbourne to within 16 early in the third quarter and even though they steadied to take a seven goal lead into the last break the popular premiership picks did not impress.
Even in defeat it was a far better performance than the first two weeks. There were especially encouraging performances from veterans Tassie Johnson and Brian Dixon, who had been disappointing so far in the new season.
Best were Bartlett, Johnson and Dixon. Neither of Melbourne's reserves were used.
