In front of the biggest home and away crowd the two sides had ever played in front of, Hawthorn captain Michael Tuck became the VFL/AFL games record holder, lining up for his 404th senior match. The record had previously been held by Richmond coach Kevin Bartlett.
After snatching the lead late in the first quarter through two Ricky Jackson goals in time-on, the Demons opened up a 57 point lead after kicking the first five goals of the third quarter before Hawthorn stormed back to make a contest of the match.
Despite reducing the margin to 12 points with 10 minutes to play time ran out before the Hawks could make it really interesting and the Demons racked up their 16th win of the year. Dermott Brereton and Jason Dunstall had been well held by Peter Rohde and Tony Campbell respectively. Brereton finally got off the leash in the last quarter, having a hand in four goals and playing a vital role in the comeback.
Best were Lyon, Stynes and Jackson.
Both West Coast and Collingwood won to deny Melbourne a spot in the Qualifying Final, leading to a rematch the following week.
After the match John Northey blasted the AFL for not telling the Demons whether their next match would be at the MCG or Waverley and when it would be played until 20 minutes after the game had finished.
