Earlier in the year, Melbourne had restarted their season after a winless first month by beating Adelaide, now the Crows were the first of three wins needed to keep their slim finals hopes alive. The Crows were the last finals contenders in their way, but after reaching quarter time nine points down they never challenged.
Around six players were hit by stomach illness during the game, but it was no excuse for only kicking three goals after quarter time. By the last term Allen Jakovich was dragged, replaced at full forward by Jim Stynes. It finally finished a season that had been on life support for months.
Century goalkicker Tony Modra missed the chance to pile on the misery, kicking 4.9.
Neil Balme lamented that his side "hardly had a winner", saying Adelaide "were more committed" and worked harder.
Best were Glenn Lovett, Andy Lovell and Jim Stynes
