The Redlegs belied a woeful record in Geelong to record a shock victory over a terribly inaccurate opponent who booted 3.21 over the last three quarters.

It was clear from the opening minutes when Melbourne's players were leading their opponents to the ball that they were the better side. The woeful kicking by the home side also contributed as they missed opportunities whenever they had them.

Despite their poor forward play the Pivotonians were just 12 points down with five minutes remaining but couldn't bridge the gap and conceded last goals to lose comfortably.
