With North having lost the Night Series final during the week, and Melbourne having lost its last two to ruin any chance of making the five the Kangaroos rode a blistering second half of the second quarter to victory at Arden Street. They piled on nine goals to set up a winning lead. The third quarter brought some relief for Melbourne but they weren't close enough to seriously challenge in the last. After kicking eight goals to six in the third, Melbourne ran out of gas and conceded four of the six goals in the last term.

Gary Dempsey dominated Glenn McLean and Stuart McKenzie in the ruck, and Phil Krakouer was more often than not at the drop of the ball, while six goals each from Blight and Briedis sank the Demons and thoughts started to turn towards 1982. Despite the ease of his side's victory, North Melbourne president Bob Ansett accused the field umpires of being biased. Earlier Roos coach Barry Cable had to be restrained by players from approaching the umpires at the three quarter time break.

Best were Ellingworth, O'Brien and O'Donnell.
