Play resumed after two weeks break for the interstate carnival, but with war having broken out in Europe and both clubs playing the season out before missing finals there was little interest in the match. What fans there were came mainly from the Richmond ranks, and they went home happy.

Despite kicking into a breeze Melbourne took a lead in the first quarter, and often had Richmond's defence under siege in a fast and surprisingly skilful opening to the game.

For a time Melbourne were on top in the second quarter, but they couldn't break through the opposition defence and gradually Richmond took over and grabbed a lead. From there they ran away to an easy victory - kicking five goals to one in the third quarter - and continued to be dominant in the last quarter but cost their side with poor goalkicking.

Baquie was one of Melbourne's best until he was caught in a big hit in the last quarter which saw him finish the day injured. Monk and McKenzie were also in the best.

Alf Williamson returned from a three game suspension and was reported again for 'elbowing and general roughness'. This time he received a 15 match ban, the longest ever handed out to a Melbourne player, and never played in the VFL again.
