Carlton had the better of the first half everywhere but on the scoreboard, with better system and ability to hit targets around the ground. Only strong defence by Howe and Geddes kept them to one goal. Melbourne's play had been individualistic while the Blues had played a better team game for scant reward. The difference was that the home side had taken advantage of their chances while Carlton were wasteful.
After half time the game swung around and Melbourne took over as the Blues deteriorated. Carlton didn't manage another goal, throwing away a golden chance to open the third quarter with one, and while the home side didn't take full advantage until the last quarter they then kicked three in a row to register a comfortable victory.
Best were Bowe, Sowden and Leigh. Herring was a late withdrawal due to a family emergency and was replaced by McClelland, who was supposed to be resting after suffering a broken wrist in a tour game to Bendigo. Debutante Craig suffered a thumb injury.
To avoid confusion between the colours of the two sides Carlton wore white.
