With only three wins for the season and no chance left of making the finals, Melbourne played spoiler for Adelaide's season, delivering their fifth straight defeat. In the absence of Garry Lyon, out again with a back complaint, David Neitz and Jeff Farmer combined for nine goals in their side's best performance of the year.

Both teams were poor in the first half, but as expected the Crows had their visitors at arms' length when 19 points up 10 minutes into the third quarter. Against the odds, Melbourne then launched a 14 goal to two run that set a record winning margin against the Crows which lasted until 2011.

Adelaide fans took poorly to the result, and in the following days police were required to protect coach Robert Shaw after his house was egged and car rammed.

Best were Stynes, Neitz and G. Lovett
