With both sides having fallen on hard times in recent years there was no suggestion that they played out a great spectacle, but it was certainly exciting.
Peter Keenan dominated the last quarter, and he returned in the last to take a crucial mark on the goalline to keep the Pies at bay. It was a perfect way to bookend the day.
Melbourne's narrow quarter time lead could have been much more but poor execution let them down time and time again. After that relatively sedate opening Barassi decided to go on the attack, and a five goal second quarter gave his side a lead at half time.
In the last quarter the lead extended to 29 points, but the Magpies piled on five in a row and drew within a point. "Crackers" then backed back and took a match saving mark and the Demons were home.
The star up forward was young Dave McGlashan who had just one goal in his first four games before the day, but booted six as a replacement for the suspended Mark Jackson to get his side over the line.
Almost at the halfway mark of his Brownlow Medal season, Brian Wilson felt the wrath of his coach when a missed handball during the second quarter cost a goal. He was dragged, with Barassi saying: “he must learn to be more productive”. He also had positive words for Wilson, who was otherwise the best player on the ground. The coach was otherwise not satisfied, snarling: “It was a shocking performance. We should have won by 10 goals”.
Best were Wilson, Johnson and Smith.
Brent Crosswell was reported for striking Wes Fellows in the third quarter but found not guilty. He reacted to the verdict by saying, "The tribunal has been wise. I embody innocence at the moment.". Alan Jarrott suffered a bruised back.
