Midfielder/forward tied to Melbourne as part of the Next Generation Academy, Smith wasn't drafted at the end of 2020. Recognising that his development had been affected by the cancellation of junior games in Victoria that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Demons offered Smith a chance to train with them in the 2021 pre-season.

Smith played in two VFL practice matches and was offered a rookie list position as part of the Supplemental Selection Period. He didn't play a senior game in his first two seasons with the club, developing at Casey Demons. Signed a contract extension to remain on the rookie list in 2023, but was delisted at the end of a year where he won the Casey Best and Fairest.

Trained with North Melbourne in the 2024 pre-season.
