Lowest score against Footscray and at the Western Oval

On a wet ground Melbourne struggled to their lowest ever score at the ground with a poor performance consisting of missed marks and dreadful field and goal kicking.

The Bulldogs goalled within the first minute of the game and from then on it was a procession, they had six straight on the board in the second term before blotting their copybook with a behind. Melbourne had enjoyed their fair share of play in the first quarter but miserable kicking for goal spoiled their chances.

At half time the home team had only one more scoring shot but a lead of 21 points and went Melbourne lost its run in the third term and scored only one point the match was over - half of their scoring shots had come during the first term.

Best were Beames, Ogden and Hooper. Abernethy was 19th man. The Redlegs remained without a win after eight matches.
