The big South side were well suited to playing on a heavy ground, and they were dominant in kicking the only 2.1 of the first quarter. Early in the second the lead was out to 4.1 against nothing before the Reds adapted to the conditions, stopped trying to play dry weather football, and snapped three goals to get back in the game.
The visitors had a good run with the umpiring in the first half but their luck deserted them in the second, and before the last change of ends had wiped out the deficit and took a one point lead. Leith got two goals early in the last to give them a buffer before South kicked a steadier - but it was as good as it got for them and Melbourne went on to win.
Best were Moodie, Herring and Leith. It was one of only four times that Melbourne have failed to score in the first term and gone on to win the match.
